“Casbah: Behind the legacy” is a street art project. Murals, calligraphic graffiti and collages that pay homage to the heritage of the ancient citadel were plastered onto its walls over the course of a few days.
Initiators : Nabila Cherchali, Houssem Mok and Nadia Carde.
In anticipation of a conference that will bring together international experts from UNESCO and the Algerian Ministry of Culture, local artists came together to create ‘Casbah: Behind the legacy’.
Houssem Mokaddem, a photographer and one of the artists responsible for the initiative explained that the idea behind the artistic manifestation was interaction with the Casbah, its people and its architecture.
“There was a will to open a conversation about immaterial heritage and not simply the real estate that is categorized by UNESCO. The inhabitants are the heart of the Casbah and its survival relies on them. Beyond this initiative, there was a real hope of re-opening a dialogue with the people of the Casbah and to interact with them.”

« Casbah behind the legacy » est un projet de Street art: fresques murales, calligraffitis, collages photos et mixed media sur les murs de la Casbah qui traitera la notion d’héritage et de patrimoine.
Initiateurs : Nabila Cherchali, Houssem Mok et Nadia Carde.
C’est une manifestation culturelle dans le cadre de la réunion internationale d’experts sur la conservation et la revitalisation de la Casbah d’Alger organisée par l’UNESCO et le Ministère de la Culture.
« Il s’agit d’une volonté de parler du patrimoine immatériel et pas simplement du bâti inscrit au patrimoine mondial de L’UNESCO. Les habitants sont le cœur de la Casbah et sa survie dépend d’eux. Derrière cette démarche il y avait également une visée de rouvrir le dialogue avec les habitants de la Casbah et de susciter une interaction entre eux et leur bâti. » à répondu Houssem Mokaddem à nos questions.

“القصبة ما وراء الإرث” هو مشروع لملصقات جدارية و كاليغرافيتي, إلصاق صور و طرق فنية مختلطة على جدران القصبة التي من شأنها أن تعالج مفهوم التراث و الإرث المادي.

“إنها رغبة في الحديث عن التراث غير المادي وليس فقط عن التراث المبني و المصنف لليونسكو، والسكان هم قلب القصبة وبقائها يعتمد عليها. أيضا هدف هذه المبادرة إعادة فتح الحوار مع سكان القصبة وخلق تفاعل بينهم وبين مدينتهم التي يقطنونها” أجاب على حسام مقدم على أسئلتنا.
