A few more guys out on the Oak today than the past weekend, but still not all that much fishing pressure. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. The forecast after the warmup for the end of week/beginning part of the weekend is back to cold temps with snow on the backside of the rain so the up and down, 2 3 day cycle will continue. Browns and Atlantics and steelhead in the mix. Some LES is coming this weekend. Some steelhead and cohos were caught with spoons. Chance of icing in select areas. Sandy Creek is probably remaining stubbornly stained from that Canal drainage but definitely dropping back some. Parking will not be allowed at anytime on the road at the top of the driveway and therefore no walk in access down the driveway. At the release time and thru the following early AM cormorant predation was largely kept in check. Spoons are UV Mags, green. Still some steelhead action hanging on in the Oak thanks to a return to good high flows without any real spike in water temps yet. As soon as the levels come down more trout will show up. Flows in the other area smaller tribs should be around med and slightly stained. Thru this weekend flows are prob more agreeable for better drifts but the water color is worse so there could be tougher action. There were some hook ups thru the past weekend right before this latest rise in flows. A few leftover coho and browns are in the system too. The next significant rise in flows may bring on some fresh steelhead action thru Mar. Lake effect rain dumped three inches of rain around the Port Bay area over the weekend. Some reports of stained water color to the east which could be a result of Canal drainage. Look for better rivermouth and lower river action each day on cool or wet weather. The king was 32 pounds, 4 ounces and it was a new Grand Prize leader for the derby. I have stayed busy trolling 60-105 ft near bottom with cut bait fly rigs especially on magnum wire divers. Consider how wet its been for months now, the high water tables, saturated fields and brim full swamp headwater supplies and youll come to realize the typical slow rise and quick fall of trib levels is going to occur more like quick rise and slow fall. Spring will offer up only so many cold water chances! Then from there it was a slow but steady pick. King numbers are slowly building in fast water areas on the Oak, besides whats been good numbers at the dam and the downstream frog water areas. Water temps have flirted with 40F but should slide back with the forecasted colder weather ahead. They fished a little west of port between the 27-29 lines of latitude. Look for a good water flow window possibly in the Genny while the Niagara remains a tough pill thanks to a windy open Lake Erie. Less noticeable will be in Sandy since Canal flows there are throttling up. Chance of maybe an ever so slight bump up and back down quick with a little more color to the water. The better reports I hear are from guys that have some Kings migrate past them or hold and they get some drifts to them. After fishing at the Point both the Black North Inn and the new Gilligans Galley (Ernst) are serving up terrific meals either sit down or to go! Wow! There was another couple inches of wet snow and something like a 0.25 inch of rain thru last night. Capt. King salmon with browns inside of 100 kings and steelhead out to 500 the bite is good. Oak rivermouth dredging operations are likely days away from finishing. In the spring while waiting for perfect conditions sometimes things only get worse, so if theres a reasonable fishing window consider hitting it sooner then later. So, flows, weather and fishing action are somewhat up and down. The project is funded through the American Rescue Plans Act which designated a portion of federal dollars to be used to promote tourism. Otherwise its a little tough to report on average fishing conditions. Water temps on Port Bay are in the high 70s and autumn is the time fish start gobbling food. The additional releases from the Erie Canal are triggering early Browns! The lower flows will concentrate the available fish in a few good lies or gravel spots. Look for cooperative wind and wave action now and thru mid week with chance for higher wind forecast at the end of the week and subsequent tougher dirtier water chances. And Erie Canal bolstered flows (year 2) will be contributing to the fishy equation sooner then later in multiple tribs! Other area smaller tribs are med to slightly high and dirty. Flows in the Oak are on the drop slightly after a bump up from the past weekends rain. Could be guys were finding easier fishing flows on the smaller waterways. We took a look at flows and found the same medium-ish or slightly high that its been and some stain, but maybe not as dirty as reported a few days ago. The charter fleet has had king salmon action in 100-120 FOW using chrome glow flasher fly combinations down to 60 ft. Any future rise in flows should perk up the action for fresh fish so well hope the upcoming forecast brings that on either with rain or snow and then melt off. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. The northeast coastal weather put a damper on show attendance and the vendors participating were down some thanks to Covid worry but the anglers who did visit the show had good interest in all of the Lake Ontario trout and salmon fishing opportunities. There seems to be a stalemate between the open Lake temps and the trib water temps thanks to the relatively mild winter. The forecasted colder temps without significant precip tho may cause some ice up conditions esp if low flows prevail. Nothing new about that for steelhead angling! Coupled with the rise in flows, hopefully, that will bring on some more brown trout migrations in the Oak. A small crush of people at the Waterport dam, but even by those standards really not that crowded. March 2020 steelhead chrome action on the Oak! Still light fishing pressure yet the regulars who are getting out there are getting their hookups like nearer the dam. Seasonable temps for the end of week and chance for a quick significant warmup with rain again around the end of the upcoming weekend. Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. Rain has been slow and steady so look for smaller area trib flows to go high and dirty probably stopping short of blown. Spoons used were Gold 42 during overcast and Silver 42 when the sun was out. When flows are reduced temporarily, it reveals pretty good numbers of fish. Flows in the Oak are slowly on the retreat from higher and dirtier flows. All the trib flows are up just a bit from the latest rain thru yesterday. Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to moderate in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. Saturday afternoon we fished 150-200 in water a few miles west of Port. Lots of anglers anxious to get out there, and a few are, but the Kings are pretty much following a normal script as far as timing. The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey is underway in Erie, Niagara and Orleans County August 20 until September 5, 2021. Out of winter hibernation just to keep the pinners honest a med fresh pretty steelhead comes to the dead drift. After unseasonably warm temps thru yesterday and wind, the forecast thru this end part of the week is cooler with rain or showers tonight going over to snow showers tomorrow. Conditions were ideal with stained river water and dirty near shore Lake waters on northwest winds for cover for the fish to disperse. Even at this almost mid-Oct timeframe, theres still good hookup chances from the nearshore Lake Ontario all the way to the dam, so the fishing opportunity definitely will spread out. Chance of some Lake Effect Snow this weekend with any accumulations expected south of here off Lake Erie. If you stayed patient and made some drifts or swings when the good flows returned by mid Apr you could be rewarded with a hungry drop back steelhead. A spate of water there too might drop back fish to downstream spots where guys are drifting and also bring on the last of the fresh run fish. One angler for the beginning part of this week reported good action. Tough time of the year for any serious drying out since everything will wind up essentially as runoff. Intrepid anglers are capable of catching fish on the Oak in all of these flows, except for maybe blown AND dirty. The NYSDEC Region 8 office in Avon, NY would in-fact love to hear from more anglers showing concern for trib issues. Definitely breaking toward Spring so get those cold water steelhead drifts in while you can. Good chance for some icing conditions coming on there. The longer those fish stay in the overflow pool, they harder they become to get out. Nights are cooling down tho, even with the current warm day temps and that has at least made for good fishing action early and late. Fishing pressure is light to moderate with what looks like a few guys here and there probably enjoying holiday time off. At least its good to see organizers and attendees efforts at getting back to a normal pre-Covid scene. Oak Orchard River Salmon Fishing (Any Cat Fish at the Dam?) The following report is courtesy of Capt. And we predict even more mixed-up conditions for the next few days. Those fish deserve a chance to immigrate back out to the Lake if caught and released back into the turbine channel. Good water flows will be the biggest factor for trout and salmon migrations in the Oak Orchard River and in the area smaller tribs and pushing them upstream. Please be aware that this might heavily reduce the functionality and appearance of our site. As we hit 515 FOW the 85 rigger fires with a Warrior Lures Blue Jeans (on the 10 ft cheater). So hopefully if it stays mild well look for rain or if it goes cold well look for snow so that good trib flows will prevail for steelhead action. Water temps for now are already in the the high 30sF on the Oak and probably going higher with the forecasted warmup thru the end of this week. With these colder temps the fish are reasonably hardy, they wont be later on. Theres still good numbers of fish higher in the Oak watercourse nearer the dam. For now flows in the Oak are moderate or optimistically almost medium and mostly clear. Our Cannon Downriggers parked at 30 & 40 with spoons back 30 were our hottest setups. Already hearing of small boat civilian trollers on the near shore Lake Ontario waters having success so casters at the pier heads should be able to get in on that action too. Fished the 26-27 line, a little west but not far. Trolling in a west direction was tough as the current was making it difficult. Colder temps could bring back some icing conditions esp in the smaller waterways if lower flows prevail. Mixed bag action on the Oak, mostly salmon action on the other area smaller tribs. So no big change in flows yet in the Oak. Anglers out over the past weekend reported a few hook ups on some steelhead by working different spots in the river. Try to keep at least six (6) feet of distance between you and others. First, take advantage of mature king, coho salmon and brown trouts urge to seek the river waters around the piers at the Point Breeze pier, channel, and bay casting with brightly colored spoons is the ticket, especially predawn and at sunset. Flows in the Oak are slightly high with something now approaching 2 feet of viz. Monday was much better with a slight breeze on the lake. The bite was not hot and heavy but we picked at a few steelhead as we approached the 30 line. This is in some contrast to earlier reports of mostly Kings kicking around on the lowering flows. Mixed bag chances for lakers, browns, steelhead in the River or on the Niagara bar rivermouth.
